STOURBRIDGE Lions sent arguably their strongest squad ever to Walsall and they delivered the goods in style.

As well as recording a bonus point win the Stourton Park team made it three games in a row without conceding a try.

Early pressure from the home side produced a penalty but the Lions struck back after four minutes with centre Cass Brookes breaking through just outside the 22 to supply twin brother Fred on the inside to score under the posts and Owen Williams added the conversion.

Ten minutes later and the Lions were already 10-3 up, Williams’ first penalty was converted after offside at the ruck. Back came Walsall with a penalty of their own to be just four points behind, after Cass Brookes was sin-binned for jumping up to try and charge down a kick from the Walsall 10, who had to leave the field.

There followed an exchange of yellow cards, with the Walsall outside centre off for up-ending Tildesley and Scotty Langdon for allegedly tacking Walsall player in the air.

On 30 minutes a series of drives left a backs' move going right where George Tildesley, having drifted from the left wing, placed a delicate chip over the remaining defence for Owen Williams to touch down near the corner.

The score was 15-6 at half-time, with little threat to the Lions’ line.

The second half opened with a Williams penalty, followed shortly after by a Walsall reply. However, this game saw none of the critical Lions’ failings this season of relaxing too much when comfortably ahead and the team drove forward with real purpose, forcing the home side on to the back foot for most of the remainder of the half.

After 60 minutes Walsall were driven back to their line, where an attempt by the full-back to kick clear was charged down by Rich Pennock, who had the speed and presence of mind to follow up and score under the posts.

The resulting Williams conversion left the Lions 25-9 ahead.

The Lions matched any attacking play from the hosts which resulted in pressure on the Walsall defence close to their line and three scoring chances from catch and drives at the lineout.

Eventually, after another series of near-misses, a kick from defence led to another flowing attack which ended with Alex Jones producing a kick of sorts for Owen Williams to score wide out on the right.

A final score of 30-9 to the Lions leaves them at the top of Midlands Two West (North) with rivals Leek and Camp Hill still to visit Stourton Park.

It was a mixed day for Stourbridge's other amateur teams, the Greyhounds travelled to Willenhall for a friendly against their second XV which ended 74-3 to the visitors.

The Grasshoppers entertained Bournville thirds in a Merit table fixture and were losing 12-17 when the game was abandoned early due to a serious ankle injury sustained by young Hoppers wing Jason Brettle.
