DUDLEY South MP Mike Wood has spoken of his shock at "very, very worrying" events in Westminster.

The MP, who is working from home after suffering an almost fatal bout of sepsis, has been watching news reports in horror as it emerged a policeman was stabbed and an attacker shot outside the Houses of Parliament this afternoon (Wednesday).

The Conservative MP (pictured below) said: “It’s absolutely terrifying that this is happening in Parliament.

“We’ve seen it happen elsewhere in Europe - we obviously hoped it wouldn’t happen here.

“Reassuringly police and security services were able to respond quickly.

“The fact that somebody was able to get into Parliament with a knife, horrifically stabbing one of the policemen in is very, very worrying.

Stourbridge News:

“We’re very lucky to have so any committed police and security officers who are being put into a horrific and dangerous position to try and protect MPs and staff who work in Parliament.

“The number of armed police has been stepped up enormously.”

He added: “Most MPs were on their way to vote or were trying to vote and they were all herded into the House of Commons Chamber; they’ve been stuck there – no one can get in or out of the chamber.”

Meanwhile, Stourbridge MP Margot James has said her thoughts are with all those who are affected.

A spokesman said: “Her thanks go out to the police and she’s really sorry about the lady who has reported to have died.”

Kinver’s MP Gavin Williamson, the Government’s Chief Whip, told the News while on lock down in the chamber: “Our thoughts are very much with those whose lives have been so affected – it’s deeply concerning.”

The Tory MP for South Staffordshire (pictured below) said MPs was in the process of having a vote when the incident unfolded and business was suspended – and he added: “We’re just locked in the chamber for the time being and can’t go until it’s safe. Police are doing a fantastic job. The pressure for them is very high, we’ve just got to let them get on with doing their job.

Stourbridge News:

“It’s such a dreadful incident. Everyone’s thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been affected by it. I hope those people who are critically injured make a quick and good recovery.”
