AN Amblecote veterinary surgery wants to hear from dog owners willing to let their pooches give blood.

Stourbridge Vets4Pets, in Amblecote High Street, is to host a charity event with the Pet Blood Bank on Sunday September 10.

But ahead of the day the vets are looking to collect contact details for pet owners keen for their four-legged friends to help save the lives of other dogs by donating blood.

The surgery will then pass details onto the Pet Blood Bank which will contact the owners directly to discuss their dog’s suitability.

Dogs do not need to be registered with the practice nor will they be asked to register.

The surgery is particularly keen to sign up Airedales, American Bulldogs, Boxers, Dobermans, English Bull Terriers, Flat-Coated Retrievers, German Shepherds, Greyhounds, Lurchers, Mastiffs, Pointers (English) and Weimaraners.

Rachael Pitty, head vet at Stourbridge Vets4Pets, said: “These breeds are more likely to have a negative blood type - that makes them the optimum donor, just like people.”

She added: "We could really do with finding about 20 dogs as we only have a certain number registered at the practice.”

To donate blood, dogs need to be fit and healthy, between one and eight-years-old, weigh more than 25kg, have a good temperament, have never travelled abroad, be fully vaccinated and not be taking any medication.

Anyone interested in registering their dog to give blood at the charity event can call the practice on 01384 370765 or check out Vets4Pets Stourbridge on Facebook, or for more details go to www.petbloodbankuk.org.
