A DUDLEY firefighter is heading to Barcelona to take part in the Ironman triathlon.

Martin Davies will cycle, run and swim his way across the city for the gruelling challenge on Saturday, September 30.

The 57-year-old, who is part of the Burton Road station's Green Watch, will donate all of the cash raised through sponsorship to Prostate Cancer.

Explaining why, Martin, who lives in Kingswinford, said: “Prostate cancer has affected several friends and colleagues within the fire service over the years, including a good friend who succumbed to the disease in 2014.

"The charity, and its work, is a very worthwhile cause."

As a firefighter, Martin is used to training but admits he boosted his usual sessions in order to be fighting fit for the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and full marathon.

He said: "I've been doing cycle rides and running around the local roads and lanes to make sure I complete the triathlon within the 15-hour cut-off point."

Martin hopes to raise £550 but it should be a doddle as he is no stranger to fundraising, having generated hundreds of pounds for charity over the years through various sporting events - including the Mont Blanc Marathon last year, which raised £645 for Dudley's White House Cancer Support.
