THE Electoral Commission faces “serious questions” over its handling of its inquiry into referendum spending by the Vote Leave campaign, according to the head of the pro-Remain group that claims responsibility for triggering a fresh investigation.

Jolyon Maugham QC, director of the Good Law Project, said it was “extraordinary” that the democracy watchdog had taken 18 months to take a “serious look” into whether rules were complied with during the poll that resulted in Britain voting to leave the European Union.

The commission announced on Monday that it had opened an investigation into spending by the pro-Brexit campaign in the lead-up to the June 2016 referendum after “new information” came to light.

A FIRE at a block of flats in north London has left one woman dead, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

Some 60 firefighters tackled the blaze at the four-storey building in Daleham Gardens, Hampstead, that broke out in the early hours of Tuesday.

Around 20 people fled the building before crews arrived, however one woman who was rescued from the building died at the scene, the LFB said.

SAILORS from the Royal Navy are getting ready to perform their first Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace.

Eighty-six sailors from 45 Royal Navy Ships and establishments have been learning the intricate routines and drill movements needed for the historic royal guarding duties at the Queen’s London residence.

They are also preparing for ceremonial guarding at Windsor Castle, St James’s Palace and the Tower of London.

ZIMBABWE’S ruling party has ordered impeachment proceedings to begin against President Robert Mugabe and expressed confidence he could be voted out within two days.

The world’s oldest head of state, meanwhile, ignored the party’s midday deadline to resign and instead summoned ministers to a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning.

The ruling Zanu-PF party’s deputy secretary for legal affairs Paul Mangwana said politicians would move a motion for impeachment on Tuesday and set up a parliamentary committee, and on Wednesday the committee would report back and “we vote him out”.
