RESIDENTS in the Black Country were left shaken this afternoon when an earthquake up to magnitude 4.9 struck the UK.

People living at Trefoil Gardens in Amblecote, Stourbridge, felt their apartments blocks shake - while residents in Stourbridge's Old Quarter and Mary Stevens Park also felt the tremor.

One resident said: “I was having a lie down and felt the bed shake and the radiator rattling.”

People in Hagley, Gornal, Pensnett, Dudley, Coseley and Birmingham also reported feeling the tremor which experts say struck Swansea in Wales just after 2.30pm today (Saturday February 17).

The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed: "We are in the process of analysing data for the felt report of a tremor in the SW of England.

"As soon as we know more we’ll let you know."

The BGS added the epicentre was approximately 20km NNE of Swansea, with 4.4 magnitude at a depth of 7.4km.

"Events of this magnitude only happen in the UK every 2-3 years," they added.
