WORDSLEY councillor Paul Brothwood has proudly unveiled new washroom facilities at Wordsley Community Centre.

The new accessible facilities at the centre have been funded thanks to a £10,000 lottery grant and a concerted fundraising effort by members of Wordsley Community Association.

Cllr Brothwood (UKIP) said: “It was an honour to support the centre’s bid for funding and make this a reality.

“This centre is the only social outlet for some people in the community.

“These facilities, with disability access, will ensure they can continue to come and enjoy the wonderful activities at the centre.”

Community centre chairman Janet Blakeway thanked cllr Brothwood for helping the association to secure the much-needed lottery grant and she added: “The funding from the lottery was most welcome and means a great deal to us.

"The £18,000 we needed in total was such an awful lot of money to raise. We did all sorts of things to raise the rest, from barn dances to raffles - you name it, we did it.”

The opening of the new washroom facility follows the addition of a stairlift at the end of last year - fitted to help ensure ageing, less mobile members of the centre can continue to attend events and classes.
