HEROES from BBC show DIY SOS have given a disabled Stourbridge woman a huge lifeline by helping her move into a new home with her sister.

Karis Lane, 27, has cerebral palsy, uses a wheelchair and is in need of constant care – but her mother Karen is struggling to provide it because of her own declining health.

As a result, Karis’s sister Johanna Lane wants her sibling to come and live at her home in Bromsgrove – but the building needed to be specially-adapted.

Such work would usually cost thousands of pounds but the BBC makeover programme – as well as generous local businesses and tradesmen – provided the labour and materials.

Over the last week-and-a-half, lead presenter Nick Knowles and his DIY SOS team have been carrying out a two-storey side extension at the home of Johanna, 34, and her partner William Cole.

The work will provide a wet-room and bedroom for Karis, as well as a new downstairs area that will feature an open plan living space and kitchen to allow her some independence.

A spokesman for DIY SOS said: “Johanna dreams of being able to care for Karis at her home.

“She’s saved a small amount of money so far by running her hairdressing business from home and also managed to get planning permission to extend (her property).

“Karis is an incredibly-motivated young woman who desperately wants to achieve independence.”

The spokesman added a thank you to the volunteers and businesses whose support enabled the work to be carried out.

He added: “We completely rely on the support and generosity of the local community of tradespeople and supplies to carry out the work, to help transform the lives of truly deserving families.”

The DIY SOS episode featuring the work on Johanna, William and Karis’s house will be screened at some point during the next 12 months.
