Fundraising shops scoop prizes

WOLLASTON traders encouraging shoppers to get romantic and help raise charity cash have been rewarded for their efforts.

For the second year running the British Heart Foundation organised a best-dressed window competition in the village in aid of the charity's Valentine Appeal.

BHF volunteers Stephanie Hogarth and Noelle Lister signed-up 12 big-hearted traders who created imaginative love-themed displays, which were judged on Monday February 11 by the Mayor of Dudley - Councillor David Stanley, Luke Mallett, BHF's regional head of community fundraising and Stourbridge college art and design lecturer Kath Jackson.

The winner's cup went to AJL Kitchen Designs and second place went to Debonaire Gift Shop.

Highly commended certificates were also awarded to Wollaston Beauty Clinic, Wollaston Chiropody Clinic and Daniel James Hair Salon.

Many shops have also organised their own raffles.

The Wine Rack is donating a voucher and Fleurs De Vie will be giving one lucky winner 12 red roses. The Post Office, Wollaston Beauty Clinic and Perfect Parties also have prizes up for grabs.

Black Country BHF fundraising manager, Janet Jones, said: "I would like to thank all those shops and businesses who took part and congratulate everyone for making such a fantastic effort with some really creative ideas, whilst supporting the British Heart Foundation.

"The displays have certainly brightened up the village and created a real communal spirit."

As part of the appeal, children from The Ridge primary school have also made their own love hearts' for display in the Tile Studio and many shops are displaying the charity's Love Notes in their windows and are encouraging shoppers to call in and write their own personal message to a loved one for £1.

All money raised from the campaign will go to the BHF's Valentine Appeal to support specialist heart nurses and the charity's Heart Information Line.
