Stourbridge & Dist Scottish Society

3:50pm Wednesday 30th April 2008

THIS year's ramble took place on Sunday 30th March.

Cliff and Chris Day led two other members in pleasant sunshine for about four miles along waymarked paths in the Arrow Valley Country Park in Redditch.

The walk started from the Countryside Centre and at first followed part of the Meadows Trail which led past the Centre's natural sewage system; here willows filter out waste products leaving clean water.

The walk traversed several meadows where over 100 species of wild flowers and grasses can be seen during the course of the River Arrow, whose water in past times powered several mills.

The party passed ancient fish ponds used by Cistercian monks to breed fish and then visited the ruins of Bordesley Abbey Visitor Centre and Needle Museum before returning to the Countryside Centre.

On Friday 4th April the society welcomed members and guests to a talk by Ken Statham on Norway.

His talk was illustrated with slides, which showed Norway to be a country of quite spectacular scenery.

The boat journey he described along the coast gave an insight into the country's industries, geography and architecture.

The event was organised by Barbara Houson and Mary Taylor.

Supper which had been prepared by the members was served after the talk.

This was supervised by Margaret Brannon and Muriel Smart.

Scottish Country Dancing continues on Friday evenings at 8:00pm in the Carlisle Hall until May 9th.

The annual general meeting will be held on May 16th prior to the summer break, an afternoon of Scottish Country Dancing on the lawns at Dudmaston Hall is planned for the afternoon of Sunday June 1st.
