DUDLEY Council tenants are being offered the opportunity to have a free home safety fire checks.

The checks will be carried out by West Midlands Fire Service as part of the council safety initiative and will assess all areas of potential accident and fire risk in the home.

Tenants will be given valuable advice and information on how to stay safe from fire.

This will include advice on kitchen hazards, secure disposal of smoking materials, and the safe use of candles, heaters and electric blankets.

The visits are offered by appointment only and fire service staff will always attend visits in uniform, with an identity card and will also use an agreed password, if the tenant wishes.

As part of its fire safety initiative Dudley Council is also encouraging tenants to ensure that they have smoke alarms fitted in their properties.

Councillor Michael Evans, cabinet member for housing said: “I would encourage all of our tenants to make use of the home safety fire checks being offered by West Midlands Fire Service.

“These won’t cost anyone a penny but they could save your life.

“Equally everyone should make sure that they have a smoke alarm fitted in their property. Another simple and easy initiative that regularly saves lives.”

Anyone who wants a fire safety check can call the West Midlands Fire Service on a free call number – 0800 389 5525.

Dudley Council tenants can contact EON on 01384 282282, or Dudley repairs management centre on 01384 818283, to arrange to have a smoke alarm fitted.
