PLANS to turn a derelict Quarry Bank pub into a block of flats have been given the green light by council planners.

The Fountain Inn in Victoria Road has been left vacant and boarded up after closing its doors earlier this year but the pub will now be turned into five one bedroom apartments after planning permission was approved.

Stewardson Developments based in Cradley Heath, have been given the go ahead at Development Control meeting held on Monday September 1.

The pub which is beginning to show signs of deterioration and is a target for vandalism and will be the tenth pub converted by Stewardson Developers, other projects being The Rock in Hill Street, Brierley Hill and The Old Bush in Moor Street.

The Fountain Inn is a listed building and the developers have worked to ensure they will preserve the original features of the building.

Director Philip Stewardson, said: “We are pleased this received unanimous support from the planning committee.

“We are inundated with opportunities created by the credit crunch and have another three projects in the pipeline, along with some larger joint venture schemes with other developers which will commence in early 2009.

“These will create opportunities to create ten new jobs over the next 12 months, ranging from admin and technical through to tradesmen.”

Quarry Bank Councillor Bryan Cotterill said: “I raised no objections about this development.

“The pub will be converted into one bed apartments which is better for the pub to be out to use rather than it being derelict.

“This development is in the best interest for the good of the area.”
