TRANSPORT Minister Paul Clark has officially opened the £27m parallel route aimed at tackling traffic congestion in Brierley Hill.
The Mayor of Dudley, Cllr Ray Burston, accompanied by Cllr Angus Adams, who helped cut the ribbon to officially declare the road open, on Thursday November 6.
Work on the multi million pound scheme started in April 2007 and centred on a route from Brierley Hill High Street, between Dudley Road and Church Street.
The cutting of the ribbon took place at the Asda junction along the new route was attended by representatives from Westfield, main contractor Carillion, consultant Waterman Civils, Brierley Hill Regeneration Partnership and Brierley Hill Traders Association.
Councillor Angus Adams, cabinet member for transportation, said: “This is a big day for Brierley Hill and I am delighted to have been at the official opening.
“From being involved since day one and seeing the road completed and fully in use is tremendous and a real achievement for all involved, congratulations to everyone.”
The Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Ray Burston, added: “The new road is truly a credit to all the partners who have worked so hard over the last few years to translate the scheme from drawing board to tarmac, as well as a testimony to the teamwork they have demonstrated that has enabled them to deliver the road on deadline and within budget.”
The scheme has been part funded by the Department for Transport (£20.32million) with land contribution from Westfield and Dudley.
Stourbridge MP, Lynda Waltho, invited the Transport Minister to take part in the opening of the new road.
She said “I invited Paul Clark to come and visit the borough and I am very pleased that he took up the offer and came to see for himself the local transport issues currently facing the borough.
“The Government gave £20million of the £27million needed for the project which really shows their commitment to improving transport infrastructure in the West Midlands”.
