Stourbridge centre gets new signs

A CENTRE which helps people with sight loss has installed new signs to make it easier for visitors to find it.

The Thomas Pocklington Trust is based on the grounds of Mary Stevens Hospice, but is located in a centre behind the hospice and many people have difficulty locating it.

Dudley Council and Thomas Pocklington Trust, which provides a variety of services from the centre for people with sight loss have now installed new signs.

Cllr Peter Miller, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said: “It’s very important for the council to work with experienced partners to provide these vital services which are tailored to the needs of service users.

“ I’m very pleased that together we’ve been able to provide the new signs which will make it easier to find the centre as well as telling local people what resources are on their doorstep.”

Thomas Pocklington Trust is a registered charity and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary which included a garden party at the centre in September.

The charity funds research and development on sight loss issues as well as providing local services at a number of centres in the UK.

It is also a leading provider of housing care offering a range of sheltered and supported housing for people with sight loss.

Services at the centre include transcribing documents into Braille and an IT suite with text-to-speech and other software for use by service users.

Trained volunteers also read correspondence, newspapers, magazines and books via a reader scheme.
