Legion stalwart enjoys trip to No 10

QUARRY Bank Royal British Legion stalwart Gloria Donovan was rewarded for all her community work with a trip to Number 10 to meet the Prime Minister.

Gloria, events organiser and assistant poppy appeal co-ordinator for legion, was invited to a reception at the PM’s Downing Street residence as part of celebrations to mark International Women’s Day.

Stourbridge MP Lynda Waltho arranged the visit to say a big thankyou to big-hearted Gloria for her efforts in promoting and fundraising for the legion and other charities.

Gloria, who went along with husband John to the VIP reception, said: “It was an honour to meet the Prime Minister and his wife - and I was able to chat with a lot of other ladies involved in charity fundraising the same as myself. I thoroughly enjoyed the occasion; it was wonderful, I’ll never forget it.”

Labour MP Lynda said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Gloria to Westminster. She is a well-known figure in the Stourbridge community and I am pleased Gordon Brown has recognised the contribution she makes to life in the constituency.

“Gloria is a driving force behind the Quarry Bank British Legion, the mainstay of their annual poppy collection and is responsible for taking commemoration education and issues into local schools.

“In fact, last November the Quarry Bank British Legion broke their previous year’s target and raised over £14,000 for their poppy appeal.

“She is also an active member of the Quarry Bank community. When the bronze plaques were stolen from the cenotaph last year Gloria moved heaven and earth within the local community to find and bring the thieves to court - and not surprisingly to everyone who knows her - she succeeded.”
