Midnight walk raises £14,000 for hospice

MORE than 300 women put their best feet forward and took part in a midnight stroll to help raise thousands of pounds for Mary Stevens Hospice.

Fundraisers at the Oldswinford based charity organised their first ever ‘Midnight Walk’ at Blakedown country house Park Hall Estate on Saturday May 9 to help boost funds.

And it looks like the event - which saw the last walkers completing the course just before 3am - will bring in a staggering £14,000.

Janet Jones, head of fundraising at the Hagley Road hospice, said: “It was fantastic. We’re really pleased. There were hundreds of pink flashing bunny ears and Abba music blasting out. It was a girly night out with a difference and it went off really, really well - so we’ll be having it again next year.”

Stourbridge MP Lynda Waltho was one of those taking part in the event, which offered participants chance to complete either a four or eight mile route around the 131-acre estate.

Labour MP Lynda completed the four-mile walk and hopes to have raised around £300 in sponsorship.

She said: “I have always been a strong supporter of the work the hospice does and it provides a vital service for many of my constituents.

“The walk was such a fantastic way to raise money and I would like to say a big thankyou to everyone involved in the event, from the co-ordinators to the walkers.”

Margot James, Conservative candidate for Stourbridge, and Halesowen Councillor Karen Shakespeare also took part in the event - completing the four-mile route and raising almost £200 for the hospice.

Margot said: “We are very lucky to have Mary Stevens Hospice in Stourbridge and it is good to be able to get out and do something to help the invaluable work that is done at the hospice for end of life care.”
