Talent show brings community together

YOUNGSTERS from Amblecote, Withymoor and Penfields impressed police officers with their talents at the final of a community talent show.

Neighbourhood officers organised the ‘Talent 22’ event at Stourbridge’s Chicago Rock Cafe as part of a continuing initiative to engage with young people and to develop a sense of community within their neighbourhoods.

Eighties rock band Highway and solo guitarist Joshua Wounderlich were voted winners out of the 16 rock bands, comedians and dancers that made it into the final - judged by Stourbridge MP Lynda Waltho, Stourbridge entrepreneur Jim Driscoll and West Midlands Police Dudley South business manager Janet Smith.

Both winners shared the £500 prize - walking away with £250 each.

Runner-up prizes included a guitar and amp set, Lazer Quest tickets, vouchers for Stourbridge’s Full Throttle racetrack, Merry Hill gift vouchers and a meal for four at Stourbridge’s Chicago Rock Café.

The cash prize was partly raised by neighbourhood officers, as they felt that it would help shape part of a wider campaign to engage with youngsters and raise public confidence.

Organiser PC Dean Palmer said: “The enthusiasm and professionalism from the acts has been wonderful.

“This initiative brought youngsters from different schools together to perform in front of each other, parents and friends. It’s been a great success.”
