Court judge praises heroic Stourbridge students

TWO Oldswinford schoolboys who chased and apprehended a hardened criminal after he tried to raid a luxury home in the area just 24 hours after his release from prison have been commended for their bravery.

Recorder Frances Judd QC at Wolverhampton Crown Court said Julian Richardson and Jonathan Ferguson had been "most impressive" in the way they gave chase and grabbed David Angell.

She said it was important the 15-year-olds were commended for their public-spirited behaviour as she told 47-year-old Angell he had been caught "red handed."

Angell had used a screwdriver to force open a window at the house in Love Lane but he was spotted by the owner as he returned to the property - Charnjit Jutla, prosecuting, said.

He said Angell then jumped over a fence and ran off in the direction of Heath Lane but the two schoolboys spotted him and they got hold of him and held on until police officers arrived.

Angell, who had been spending up to £300 a day on his heroin and crack cocaine habit, had been "in and out of prison" for most of his life, the court heard.

The Recorder said he had been released from custody just hours earlier on licence from a four-and-a-half-year prison term imposed for burglary.

She added: "You have a very long and a very bad record.

“You also have a very serious drug problem. It is not surprising you have committed so many offences when you look at just how much money you were spending on drugs."

Angell, of Cranley Place, Perry Barr, Birmingham, admitted attempted burglary and was put back behind bars for two years.
