Four sixth-form students from Old Swinford Hospital School, Heath Lane, collected Gold Crest Awards (Creativity in Science and Technology) from the British Science Association for over 100 hours of project work.

Star student Leah Foley, aged 18, picked up a science award after for her work at a research lab at Birmingham University while on the Nuffield Science Bursary (NSB) scheme.

She was presented with the Best Project award when she presented her research at the NSB Showcase event earlier this month.

Leah said: “I was working with stem cells alongside PhD students and enjoyed learning from them, It was a fascinating experience and I received a bursary of £80 per week to help with expenses.”

Other award winning students from the school were Laura Deeley, aged 17, who developed a turtle feeding programme at the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham and Richard Clark, aged 17, from Norton who worked at a hospital in the region on CT scanning.

The final member of the winning quartet was Alex Dakin, aged 17, who worked with NHS West Midlands, in the Birmingham East and North Primary Care Trust, to audit how NHS practices could improve access to GP information for their patients through the NHS Choices website.

Crispian Waterman, head of biology at Old Swinford Hospital School, said: “We have been involved with the Nuffield Science Bursary for three years and we are delighted with the response and enthusiasm that our students have displayed in committing themselves to this sort of project during their much needed summer holidays.

“To win the best project award for the science section was a real highlight, most notably for Leah who is proving to be packed full of potential.”
