A KINGSWINFORD school is going green after becoming the first in the borough to be heated by sustainable sources.
Dawley Brook Primary School, Dubarry Avenue, is starting the New Year by celebrating the installation of an eco-friendly boiler system powered by biofuel.
The school is hosting a ceremony on Wednesday January 13 to mark the installation of the £150,000 system which Dudley education bosses hope will be a template for similar projects in other borough buildings.
Councillor Liz Walker, Dudley cabinet member for children’s services, said: “The school was due to have its old heating system replaced and this new, low-energy, highly-efficient system is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional boilers.
“It will provide heat as and when it is required and will reduce the school’s future fuel bills.”
The new low energy use boiler burns highly compacted wood pellets made from timber industry waste, such as sawdust, which are sourced locally.
The pellet burner takes over from two gas powered heaters which begin heating the school while domestic hot water comes from a series of solar panels on the roof of the refurbished boiler room.
Dawley Brook was recently awarded a green Eco-schools flag, recognising their commitment to playing a part in saving the planet by composting, recycling and growing their own vegetables.
