NEARLY £2million Government cash is to be spent on building new council homes in Wordsley and Quarry Bank.
Twenty-one new houses are to be built in Blackthorn Road, Wordsley, and 13 new homes will be created on a former garage site and council compound in Woodland Avenue, Quarry Bank, at a total cost of £1,795,646.
The developments form part of a wider £4.3million scheme in the Dudley borough to build the first new council homes in 20 years.
Twenty-two new homes will also be built in Norwood Road, Brockmoor, Brierley Hill; six new houses will be built in Tenacre Lane, Upper Gornal; and 19 will be built in Wood Road, Lower Gornal.
As well as providing a total of 81 affordable and energy efficient new homes, the project - funded by the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency - will also provide jobs and apprenticeships for people across the borough.
Councillor David Simms, Dudley’s cabinet member for housing, libraries and adult learning, said: “This is fantastic news for the borough.
“It’s been a long time since the council has had the opportunity to develop new properties and we’re going to grab it with both hands and develop homes we can be proud of. A majority of the sites are on redundant land and ripe for development.”
Labour MP Lynda Waltho, who announced the scheme with Housing Minister John Healey MP, said: “This year’s Government spending for affordable housing will be the largest ever.
“My advice surgeries are full of people with housing problems. At last Tory controlled Dudley Council has no more excuses for failing to provide more affordable council accommodation.”
The new properties will be a mix of two-storey apartments, bungalows and houses for people with general housing needs - and some designed specifically for people with special needs.
Public meetings will be held in each of the areas to give residents chance to share their views on the developments - and planning applications for the five sites will be submitted in April.

I just hope that there is a strict criteria for the potential residents of these proposed properties. It would be a shame if they are given to the wrong type and not to those more deserving. Maybe not a PC line, but would you like to live next to people partying at all hours, on asbo's etc? I think not.
