Stourbridge MP welcomes fuel payments

STOURBRIDGE MP Lynda Waltho has welcomed the Government’s £2.7 pledge to fight fuel poverty, following the recent cold snap.

Households with someone aged 80 will get an extra £100 and those with someone aged 60 to79 will get a £50 boost, making their Winter Fuel Payments £400 and £250 respectively.

The Labour MP said: “The Government is committed to tackling fuel poverty and has already put in place a number of measures to help those vulnerable to fuel poverty.

“No-one should have to worry about turning on the heating, especially in the cold weather we’ve been experiencing. The Government is making the increased cold weather payment from £8.50 to £25 for winter 2009-10.”

They might not have to worry now, Lynda; but they will in five or ten years time when the lights start going out because your government has left it perillous too late to replace all the electricity generating capacity that is being lost with the closure of Britain's ageing coal-fired and nuclear power stations.
