A GOLDEN couple from Wollescote got off to a record breaking start after a shop floor meeting led to romance.
Jean and Don Hipkiss from Alperton Drive, who celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss on Saturday February 6, got together after the groom-to-be saw his future wife working in Littlewoods store in Dudley.
Jean, now aged 70, was carrying a box of LPs when Don, now 73, asked her out as soon as he saw her, in her surprise Jean dropped the box causing two of the records to shatter.
The couple married at St Francis Church in Dudley after a three-year engagement and have a son, daughter, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
After their wedding the couple became licensees, running a number of pubs in the Black Country including the Ivy House in Kate’s Hill and the Golden Cross in Netherton.
They celebrated their anniversary with a surprise party for 30 family and friends.
Jean believes the secret to a successful marriage is to sort out differences as soon as they happen.
She said: “Be truthful to one another, we have had our ups and downs but have never gone to bed on a quarrel.”
