A SIGN for the time has been hailed a fitting tribute for a Stourbridge stalwart’s last campaign.
A new pair of plaques to discourage cyclists from chaining bikes to the railings of the town centre’s clock will also serve as lasting reminder of two decades of work by Stourbridge township councillor John Shepherd to improve the area.
Mr Shepherd died in December last year aged 71, one of the last issues he campaigned for was keeping the Grade II listed High Street structure clear of bikes.
Councillor Les Jones, Dudley cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Although the township council is not an elected or political body we do recognise the commitment of its members to Stourbridge and respected Mr Shepherd’s work as a conscientious local resident.
“We hope that the installation of these signs, which were one of John’s last projects will be tribute to this keen campaigner and will help to keep the town clock special for all residents of the borough.”
Mr Shepherd’s widow Kari, who has now taken over his role as clerk of the township council, joined cllr Jones and township council chairman Margaret Scott last week to take a look at the new signs, which were funded by Dudley Council’s town centre management team.
Cyclists in Stourbridge town centre are reminded there are cycle racks in Talbot Street, Bell Street and High Street.
