DUDLEY South MP Chris Kelly is calling for a quarry security review after the death of a teenager.

Augusto Zacarias, aged 15, was found dead in a pool known as Blue Lagoon in Lower Gornal close to its border with Kingswinford.

The pool is a former quarry pit and a popular swimming spot for young people during summer holidays.

The tragic teen died on July 25 after he entered the water but did not surface, a search and rescue operation involving police divers recovered his body seven hours later.

A spokesman for Mr Kelly said: "Kids don't see the danger, these are the pitfalls of these places. Chris will wait until after the inquest and then write to the company.

"They have to review security, repair fences and there needs to be mobile patrols during the school holidays."

Augusto, originally from Portugal, moved to the Black Country in March with his parents, Paulina and Pedro, and his one-year-old brother, Samuel.

His family want more drastic action at the quarry and, with support from the African charity, Cocoa, are collecting signatures on a petition for presentation to Mr Kelly, Dudley North MP Ian Austin and quarry owners Wienerberger.

Speaking through an interpreter, Paulina, who led a protest at the scene of the tragedy earlier this month, said: “I want the quarry to be closed off and filled in. Augusto was my eldest son. We are no longer ourselves since his death.

"We don’t want to live anymore, we have lost the will to live.”

Augusto's funeral took place in Dudley on Friday August 17, an inquest has been opened and adjourned.
