HISTORY fans can find out more about Stourbridge’s past when the town hall throws open its doors as part of the annual Heritage Open Days scheme.

There will be exhibits from the Black Country Society and Stourbridge Historical Society and archive material from across the Black Country displayed at the Crown Centre venue which will open to the public from 10am till 3pm on Saturday September 8.

The venue will also be the starting point for a town tour which gets underway at 11am; and performances by amateur dramatics groups will take place from 12.30pm.

Events will also be running at Dudley Council House from 11am till 3pm.

Chairs which were present at two of the most historic events of the last century will be on display in Dudley.

The chairs were give as souvenirs to the Earl of Dudley who attended both the coronation of King George VI in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. He later donated them to the council.

Visitors to the Priory Road building will also be able to join in guided tours of the council chamber at 11.30am 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm and view photographs of Dudley Market over the years.

There will also be a children’s trail, quiz and colouring activities and visitors can enjoy a cup of tea with the Mayor and Mayoress.

Councillor Melvyn Mottram, Mayor of Dudley, said: “There are so many fascinating things to look at and learn about on heritage open day and I hope people will go along to one of the events to delve into a bit of our history.”
