A DUDLEY secondary school has shut its doors for the final time.

Pensnett High School was officially closed down on Friday (August 31) after its remaining pupils picked up their exam results.

Under the previous Tory administration, Dudley Council took the decision to shut the Tiled House Lane school, claiming it had become educationally and economically unviable.

Following the ruling, pupils in years seven and eight were relocated to new schools in July 2010 and staff numbers were reduced, as the school became Pensnett 14- 19 Education Campus, which operated as an annex under the auspices of the local authority.

For the last two years the facility has only catered for 140 pupils in its top years, who were already studying towards their GCSEs when the decision was made.

However with the last of the pupils having reached the end of their school days and picked up their GCSE results on August 23, the campus has now been closed altogether – although no decision has yet to be made on the future of the building, it is hoped the school’s sports facilities remain in use for the community.

Councillor Tim Crumpton, cabinet member for children's services, said: “Pensnett High School closed as a school on August 31 and we are in the process of decommissioning the site.

“We wish the last year 11 pupils all the success for the future and I would also like to thank everyone who has made this successful for the pupils who remained there.

“We are continuing to work with partners and the local community to ensure the sports facilities remain in use.”
