WOLLASTON'S Leonard Road looks set to be plunged into darkness this year with residents saying they have no plans to light up their homes and gardens anymore.

People living in what for the last few years has been the most festive street in the country say they are no longer "unique" and their traditional lights display - which has raised thousands for charity and attracted visitors from across the country - will not be going ahead this year.

A spokesman for the residents Sue Buckley said: "Christmas is way down on my list of priorities this year.

"And from what I've heard in the street I don't think there will be a display this time.

"We're not unique anymore. Our street started it but there's so many streets in so many areas that are doing this now."

Last year's lights display raised around £20,000 for the Georgina Unit for leukaemia sufferers at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley - but the sparkling spectacle got off to a shaky start after a row erupted between residents and a street trader trying to cash in on the event by selling burgers.

Resident Helen Reed said: "I've just about had enough after last year and the usual half a dozen that go the whole hog are not doing it.

"I shall put a few lights up but I don't think there's going to be anything like the shows we have had in the past.

"There's going to be a lot of kids disappointed.

"But it's not such a novelty anymore; everything has to come to an end."

Neighbour Sue Hutton added: "What happened last year killed it - it's not going to be worth coming this time."

In the early days Leonard Road was a festive TV favourite.

The twinkling street was featured on Central News, Midlands Today and GMTV and a Korean television crew even descended one year after news of the Wollaston winter wonderland spread far and wide.
