Anti-drilling protestors set to arrive in Oldswinford

PROTESTORS are set to be out in force in Oldswinford to ask motorists for support in a battle with oil giant Shell.

Greenpeace volunteers will be picketing the Shell garage on Hagley Road from 11am on Saturday September 22 - to demand a permanent end to Arctic drilling.

Campaigners aim to speak with drivers, passers-by and even garage staff about the company's exploration of the region around the north pole which they say would cause an eco-catastrophe if there is an oil spill.

Greenpeace volunteer, Peter Robinson, said: “Shell have said that they will stop drilling in the Arctic for the rest of this year, some of this decision is due to the huge pressure people have put on them for drilling in the Arctic.

"However it is also due to the fact that they have just had a massive near miss after an ice floe drifted towards their drill ship, their inability to be prepared for this happening and thus avoid a serious incident shows how dangerous and potentially lethal their actions are."

Good for them - they're quite right that if anything like the BP disaster happened the result would be appalling. Whether anyone in this environmentally backward West Midlands will actually listen is another matter. But I hope there are some enlightened and intelligent people out there who will support this.
