THE police watchdog is to probe how officers responded when a Dudley man died on a bus outside a police station.

Tony Jones, aged 28, was declared dead by paramedics on a No. 1 Dudley to Tettenhall bus which had diverted to Wolverhampton’s Bilston Street police station after the driver became concerned about his passenger’s condition.

Mr Jones, who appeared to have been drinking, is believed to have collapsed on the bus and after attempts to revive him failed, the driver took the vehicle to the nearest police station.

Neil Coyte, from the Independent Police Complains Commission (IPCC), said: “The investigation is looking into the response of police officers and a civilian staff member after a bus driver asked for help at Wolverhampton Central Police Station at around 6.25pm on October 17 2014.

“At this stage the IPCC has established that the driver parked the bus outside and went in to request assistance to deal with a passenger he believed to be drunk.

“The bus driver returned to the front counter at 6.36pm. He was then joined by a passenger at 6.46pm who provided further information regarding Mr Jones’ condition and the bus driver called an ambulance.”

It is not yet known if Mr Jones was dead when the bus arrived at the police station, a post mortem has been conducted but the results were inconclusive.
