VISITORS to Netherton will soon be able to read all about the area's "claim to fame".

Dudley planners have given the go-ahead for two interpretation panels to be installed by the Netherton anchor.

The panels will explain the history and of the original Titanic anchor, cast by Noah Hingley and Sons, and the story of the lifesize replica, which is situated opposite Netherton Arts Centre.

Speaking at the council's Development Control Committee on Tuesday (February 24), committee chairman Councillor Qadar Zada, who represents Netherton, said: "I think the Titanic anchor is Netherton's claim to fame. It's absolutely right that people who see it know the history and the contribution that was made.

"The ship might not have had a good ending but the anchor, the history and its origin is something that we are extremely proud of in Netherton."

He added: "What we do want to see is tourist attraction being beyond the centre of Dudley and across the whole borough. Each town has a contribution to make and this is Netherton's."

Following the meeting, Councillor Hilary Bills, cabinet member for environment and culture, said: “We’re delighted that the new interpretation panels, which should ensure the anchor is an attraction for tourists visiting the area, have received planning approval."
