THE Mayhem Theatre Group is flying the flag for Halesowen this weekend at the Worcestershire Theatre Festival.

A cast of nearly 20 is heading to Droitwich to perform the play The Sandlewood Mouse at the Norbury Theatre, Droitwich in the 56th annual festival.

Founder of the group Mark Moran, who wrote The Sandlewood Mouse, is looking forward to performing on Sunday at 2pm.

He said: "The festival is great fun and is really competitive with some really talented people performing."

The group have won several awards at the festival previously and are hoping to qualify for the All England Theatre Festival.

Mark added: "We have some great memories of the festival as we won six awards in 2011 for our play Goodnight Sarajevo and went on to represent Worcestershire in the All England finals."

This year's play is about a married couple who decide to sell off a family heirloom only to be consumed by greed and the unexpected.

Mr Moran added: "I wanted to write something funny but ended up getting a little bit obsessed myself in buying items from Ebay which feature in the play.

"Winning would be wonderful but most of all I hope it goes off well as we have a big cast and I want everyone to be proud of themselves."

The Halesowen group will be pitting their wits against The Norbury Players, Wordsley Amateur Dramatic Society, Swan Youth Theatre from Worcester, Tewkesbury Amateur Dramatic Society, Blakedown 272 Youth Theatre, Great Witley Operatic Society and Dedrama Theatre - who feature deaf actors.

The plays are being performed over four sessions on Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8 in a mixture of youth and adult performances.

Tickets for each session are £6, and can be booked by calling 01905 770154, or purchased on the door. For more information look at the full programme, visit worcs-theatre-festival.org.uk.
