A RETRO games store in Cradley, which came under threat when Dudley Council ordered the removal of a security roller shutter 18 months ago, is celebrating its first anniversary in new premises.

Vintage Gamer boss Nick Browne was refused retrospective planning permission for the shutter by planners who branded it a “negative design feature”.

He feared he would have to abandon his Windmill Hill business in Colley Gate as it was not possible to fit an internal shutter and he was not prepared to leave the premises insecure.

After his plight was reported in the News and taken up by councillors and the Cradley Action Group, planners indicated he would gain permission for his shutter if he re-applied.

“But that would have cost me another £320 and a bigger shop a few doors up with a shutter was available so I moved,” said the 32-year-old.

He is marking his first anniversary in the former launderette with an open day on Saturday (May 2), inviting regular and new customers to join in the fun.

Gaming tournaments will be held alongside traditional games such as apple bobbing and there will be free food and refreshments.

Mr Browne added: “Children will be able to play the retro arcade games in the back free of charge – as usual. It keeps them off the streets and they enjoy coming in.”
