A RETIRED police officer who stopped masked raiders in their tracks has been honoured by the country’s most senior cops.

The masked men attempted the robbery at Wall Heath Post Office when they stormed the store on March 21, 2014.

Two of the offenders approached the counter where 66-year-old Alfred Allington was waiting to be served.

One man jumped over the counter while the other pushed Alfred back, shouting at him to stay away from the desk. He then shouted at the cashier to hand over the money.

But, without thought for his own safety, Alfred ignored the man and pushed him away, tussling with him until he backed off. Alfred then turned his attention to the other man stood on the counter, grabbing hold of him and pulling him down.

His actions resulted in both men being detained.

To thank Alfred for his bravery, he was presented with a silver certificate by head of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, chief constable Sara Thornton, at the 50th Police Public Bravery Awards in Manchester, alongside West Midlands Police’s deputy chief constable Dave Thompson.
