WORKERS' Memorial Day will be marked by the GMB trade union in the grounds of St John the Baptist, Halesowen, tomorrow (April 28).

It is estimated that more than 80 people will attend, including Labour MP Pat McFadden along with members of the GMB, Labour Party and local community.

This year the theme for the international  day is Strong Laws - Strong enforcement - Strong Unions in reaction to union claims of growing attacks on health and safety protection across the world.

A hundred balloons will be released and a wreath laid at the church in memory of all those killed and injured in their workplace.

Joe Morgan, GMB regional secretary, said: "Unionised workplaces are safer, yet the government is trying to stop unions protecting the health and safety of their members by restricting the right of health and safety representatives."

He added: “In 2015 the number of fatal injuries in the workplace was 142, this is still 142 too many."
