EXPERT growers have earned a prestigious Green Flag for their allotments in Cradley for the first time.

The Abbey Road Allotment Association has been awarded the status given nationally as a mark of a quality park or green space.

Allotment secretary Mike Hollis said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the first time from Keep Britain Tidy.”

He added: “It is recognition of the work that is done all year by the plot holders on the allotment, who come from all walks of life”

The 49-plot site is self-managed, allowing the individual plot holders to grow produce of their choice. There are also specially designed plots for use by disabled people.

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, especially as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Awards.

“All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities
