A YOUNG Dudley driver hit 105mph during a terrifying police chase that came to a dramatic end when his tyres were burst by a stinger device.

The pursuit began when police officers spotted David Bowers running a red light, said Justin Jarmola, prosecuting.

He told Wolverhampton Crown Court that during the chase, 21-year-old Bowers overtook other vehicles at speed and went through a set of traffic lights on green at 85mph.

Judge Simon Ward said Bowers had made a determined bid to get away from the chasing police officers.

He added that as Bowers had been the victim of a hit and run in the past, he thought he would have learned a "great lesson".

The judge told Bowers that people who drove as dangerously as he did were normally sent to custody immediately But he said it was clear that because of personal problems he may have not realised the danger in which he had placed other road users.

Bowers, of Stourbridge Road, admitted driving dangerously, without insurance or a licence and he was given an eight month jail term, suspended for two years.

He was also disqualified from driving for two years, must carry out 60 hours unpaid work and obey a three month curfew between 9pm and 6am.

Stephen Hamblett, defending, told the court that Bowers, who was driving a friend's car, panicked when he saw the police vehicle.
