DUDLEY Zoo is inviting visitors to join in with its World Camel Day celebrations.

Charles, Jimandi and Fergie, the zoo’s resident Bactrians, will be playing a key role in helping staff raise awareness of the critically endangered wild camel.

There are thought to be only 1,400 wild camels surviving in China and Mongolia as most of the planet’s 1.4 million Bactrians are domesticated.

On Saturday (June 24), the zoo will be raising cash for The Wild Camel Protection Foundation, by holding a competition to name a large, cuddly camel toy and selling dress-up camel ears and tails.

Funds raised will help the UK based charity with its work to protect the species and its habitat.

Leslie Lewis, section leader, said: “We’re pleased to be supporting World Camel Day and raising awareness for the species.

“People are always surprised to discover how camels are critically endangered in the wild, but we’re inviting visitors to come and find out more about the species and our camel family.”
