INSPIRATIONAL student nurses from the Black Country have been shortlisted for top national industry awards.

Mature adult nursing student Dominic Allan is in the running for Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year in the Student Nursing Times Awards which celebrate the best in nurse education.

Stourbridge News:

The 35-year-old from Stourbridge was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer during the second year of his studies but the dedicated dad-of-two underwent radiotherapy while also continuing with his lectures, and even went on to complete his practice hours.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been shortlisted for the most inspirational student nurse of the year.

"I have faced many challenges in the last 12 months, but with an amazing network of family, friends and professional colleagues I have been able to achieve success and become a role model to inspire fellow students."

Cara Large, from Kingswinford, is also celebrating after being shortlisted in the Student Nurse of the Year: adult category.

Stourbridge News:

The 35-year-old reflected on her experiences during a clinical placement to have her work published in leading journal, Nursing Standard.

She said: “I was absolutely made up to have the article published - completely shocked and blown away. I never actually thought people would want to read something I had written, so it’s amazing to now be nominated for an award.”

The university’s work with the Dudley Group of Hospitals is also shortlisted in the Student Experience category.

The nomination recognises the Dudley Group’s learning disability simulation facilities, which provide positive student experience to learning disability nursing students from the University while they are on placement.

The awards will take place on Thursday April 26 at the London Hilton on Park Lane.
