A STREET party in Halesowen which celebrated two special centenary events has raised £1,550 for charity.

On Saturday (June 16), the residents of Waxland Road hosted a party to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War and the beginning of votes for women thanks to the suffragettes.

The successful day, which saw all guests receive a poppy crocheted by Margaret Williams, saw stalls selling artisan items, books, toys, plants and bric-a-brac, helping to boost the charity funds.

The money is set to be shared between local causes including Halas House, Halesowen in Bloom, Leasowes Walled Garden, the Royal British Legion and Woodgate Valley Urban Farm.

Throughout the day there was a variety of entertainment, with Pippa the Playbus especially popular with the younger guests, while the tombola and raffle ensured everyone went home with lots of prizes. The day was rounded off with an auction.

John Williams, a member of the street party committee, which worked tirelessly to make the event a success, said: “None of this would be possible without the generosity of the local businesses who sponsored the event with cash, vouchers and prizes and the amazing residents and guests who gave so very generously prior to the event and throughout the day.”
