David Davies, who has 12 years experience of working in the cold weather, finding and fixing leaks for Severn Trent, said: “When water freezes within a pipe it expands, putting more pressure on the pipes and joints, often causing pipes to split or joints to pull apart.

Severn Trent is only responsible for the water pipe in the street and footpath up to the boundary of a customer’s property. Anything inside the property boundary is the responsibility of the homeowner.

Mr Davies added: “If you do find that you have a problem and you’re unsure what to do, you will probably need to call a plumber. We have a list of approved plumbers on our website at”
