Tesco to open Stourbridge superstore at end of October
3:00pm Wednesday 18th September 2013 in Local
STOURBRIDGE’S new multi-million pound Tesco superstore is set to throw open its doors at the end of next month – three weeks ahead of schedule.
Around 400 new full and part-time jobs are being created by the £50million store which Tesco bosses now say will open on October 31.
The town’s MP Margot James is due to have a sneak preview of the site, which features a 550 space car park offering three hours free parking, a cafe and public square, tomorrow (Friday).
Ms James said: “I’m impressed with the speed with which they have developed it and I’m very pleased they’re giving three hours free parking.
“Quite a lot of people go in for meetings and evenings and need half a day and that will really give people visiting Tesco a good opportunity to go into the town, which is what we’re all so anxious about.
“I think it will look nicer than what its replacing.
“Tesco were determined to come here; it’s better to have them in the High Street than outside the ring road – it will draw people into the town.”
The supermarket giant will be giving out information about posts available at a jobs fair organised by Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP James Morris at the Salvation Army in Cradley Heath from 11am till 3pm on Thursday September 26.
Around 100 of the jobs will go to the long-term unemployed - people who have been out of a job for more than six months.
They will have to complete an eight-week course before being taken on.
Simon Petar, Tesco’s Corporate Affairs Manager, said: “We are really excited about our new store and can’t wait to get the doors open - serving both customers and the community.”
An average of 55 workers from four different contractors have been working on the site of the old Crown Centre and Bell Street multi-storey car park each day since March.
The car park was brought down using explosives and landmovers cleared 9,000 tons of rubble.
The scheme also includes a handful of new retail units.
