A STOURBRIDGE chippy has battered competition to be crowned the best in the West Midlands.
Merchants has been recognised in the Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year award, as part of the 2014 National Fish and Chip Awards.
But the chips are still down for the Worcester Street chippy, as it takes on Simpsons fish bar in Gloucestershire, in a bid to be named as the overall winner for the Midlands in the awards organised by Seafish, the industry’s authority on seafood.
Owner Antony Akathiotis, aged 31, of Halesowen, said: “It is a great achievement. Simpsons won it last year, it is a fantastic shop and they are very good at what they do.
“It is a tough competition. Every fish bar strives to be the best but to get this far is an achievement in itself. There are a lot of good chip shops in Stourbridge and the surrounding areas.”
He added that the standard of the food and well trained staff stood Merchants in good stead to win.
The two shops will be assessed by an industry judge, who will make an surprise visit to the shop and conduct a detailed inspection of premises and practices, including the tasting and testing of products.
The judging stage will determine the best in the Midlands and one of the top 10 in the UK that will secure a place in the national final in January.
The awards ceremony will be held at the Lancaster London hotel on January 22, 2014, hosted by Michelin-starred chef and TV personality Jean Christophe Novelli, who will announce the overall UK winner.
