ROAD safety bosses are urging pedestrians and motorists to look out for each other this New Year and share the roads responsibly.

The Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia, together with West Mercia Police and Warwickshire Police, is reminding all road users to share the road responsibly during the festivities - especially at night when it is more difficult to see clearly.

Pedestrians are encouraged to ensure they are visible to motorists, use pedestrian crossings where possible, avoid walking near fast or unlit roads and take extra care not to stray on to the road if they’ve been drinking.

Vicki Bristow, communications manager at the Safer Roads Partnership, said “With one of the busiest nights of the year upon us, we’re encouraging all road users to share the road responsibly. "Sadly, 11 pedestrians have been killed and 80 have been seriously injured in Warwickshire and West Mercia since March 2013.

"By following a few simple steps, looking out for each other and being aware of other road users, we can all do our bit to keep ourselves and others safe on the roads.”

Motorists are also urged to take extra care and look out for other road users who may be more vulnerable, particularly at night when it is dark and pedestrians may be coming out of pubs and clubs after drinking.

West Midlands Ambulance Service has also issued the same warning. A spokesman said: “We would urge drivers to be on the look-out for pedestrians and pedestrians to choose their crossing points carefully to minimise the chances of accidents happening.”
