A STOURBRIDGE glass designer has shown his support for a project that helps homeless youngsters find temporary lodgings.

Kevin Barry, who runs a business in the Ruskin Glass Centre, designed lead crystal wine glasses and a tumbler and donated them to YMCA Black Country to be auctioned off later this month.

Funds raised through the auction will be ploughed into the YMCA's Open Door project, which places young people with host families and equips them with the skills they need to be independent.

Mr Barry had a helping hand creating the exclusive glasses as they were cut by Marcus Mason-Williams, who is currently on a work placement.

Explaining why he got involved with the project, which helped more than 100 young people last year, Mr Barry said: "When I heard about the Open Door project, I wanted to do something to help as I liked the idea of a project which really makes a difference in the local community.”

Rachael Taylor, host co-ordinator for the YMCA , added: "Kevin's glasses are really beautiful and unique. We are really grateful for this donation and hope it will help us to raise our £5,000 target when they are auctioned at our ball."

The charity ball will take place on Saturday March 29, at West Bromwich Albion Football Club.

Following a champagne reception, guests will sit down for a three-course meal and enjoy entertainment from Specials tribute band the 2tonics.

Tickets cost £50 each with table discounts available.
