Demand from Muslims puts pork off the menu at Merry Hill restaurant

PORK is off the menu at one of Merry Hill's Subway stores due to demand from Muslim customers.

It has emerged the popular sandwich chain's restaurant, located on the lower mall of the Brierley Hill shopping centre, is one of 189 halal-only stores.

The outlet, which opened in December last year, substitutes ham and bacon for turkey ham and rashers to cater for Muslim customers who are forbidden to eat meat from pigs and any non-halal food.

In Arabic, the term halal means 'permitted' or 'lawful' and defines anything that is allowed or lawful according to the Qur'an.

It is often used in the context of food - especially meat - to indicate the food has been prepared in accordance with Muslim principles and techniques.

Killing an animal without prior stunning is illegal in Britain, but the law gives special exemption to Muslim and Jewish meat producers on the grounds of religion.

However a Subway spokesman said all animals used for its meat were "stunned prior to their slaughter".

The shopping centre's other Subway restaurant, located in the food court, is not a halal store.

Brierley Hill councillor Zafar Islam welcomed the choice given to shoppers and said it would encourage people to visit the centre if they had a food outlet that catered to their dietary requirements.

He said: "I think the stores are probably responding to consumer demand. My view is there should be choice but no-one should force others to eat particular things."

Cllr Islam said Merry Hill visitors would like to have food that is "in keeping with their religious and cultural beliefs" and said that did not just apply to Muslims, but everyone: " The more choice we have the better."

Maybe this moron could explain how REMOVING pork from the menu = more choice for customers...

Subway have approached this incorrectly. It's a slippery slope they are engaging on.

Whatever happened to personal choice for everyone and not one particular religious group? What about kosher food etc? The list could go on.

Funny too that their current tv campaign is all about the 'bacon sub', talk about contradiction!

Of course if someone put up a sign in their eatery along the lines of "only food served here, folks would be up in arms.

Why can't they just cater for both in both outlets. Reasonable people would find that to be.....reasonable.

So, you remove an item and that's giving customers choice is it? So I can no longer choose to have bacon... It's a forced situation for me. However, a certain group of people don't want to choose NOT to have bacon and have narrowed down our choice...

Best choice is to EAT SOMEWHERE ELSE then! I work in Merry Hill, and 8-10 years ago, I used to work at a Subway outlet. I am SO disappointed in this stupid decision.

It's a certain group of people who seem to open Subway stores these days, so of course they're looking after their own. Sad, really.

Actually, I'm lactose intolerant. I demand cheese be removed, the milk be taken from the coffee machine, and the sauces be dairy free. I believe this will be better for customers as they will have better choice.

Can I be councillor of Brierley Hill too, now that I've passed the idiot test?

It would be interesting to know how pressure was applied to change to a halal menu at Subway. The article says that the change was made due to 'demand'.

There is also a wider issue here. The exemption from adherence to animal cruelty laws was granted to specific religious groups. Surely this does not apply to the wider sale of these products to people who are not bound by these religious doctirnes? Yet, we have restaurants and shops with notices proclaiming that they are 'halal' retailers and selling products lawful only for purchase by people exempt from laws on animal cruelty, on religious grounds, but selling to the wider community who are not exempt from these laws. Supermarkets likewise do not check whether the purchaser of halal products (a) now what they are purchasing or (b) are exempt from the law.

Humane meat production reflects the cultural values of the UK. These laws are now totally eroded.

It's hard to imagine your average muslim would be unable to go into a shop and choose something without pork in it really. You'd have to imagine it's being done to placate the 0.01% of the population that are just awkward so and so's because it suits them to be.

Subway should be ashamed!
they are now denying innocent animals the few rights they are provided under British law.
Are we saying that someone would not Visit Subway on religious grounds because they sell Pork products or boycott the store because they comply with British law in the way that they "humanely" stun the animals prior to killing them?
if so do the same people also not Visit Asda, Sainsbury's etc etc

I am vegetarian and feel that the barbaric slaughter of innocent animals is wrong on any level, but to deny the animal the right to be stunned prior to slaughter is beyond cruelty...

Animals don't choose a religion but they are killed barbarically to conform to one!
