CHILDREN and staff at Quarry Bank Primary School have been celebrating all that is good about books.

The school in Quarry Bank High Street staged an assembly last Friday (May 16) to mark the end of a project promoting reading and literacy for enjoyment and as a necessary lifelong skill.

During the previous few weeks - pupils took part in book quizzes, celebrated World Book Day and welcomed author John Macnally in to the school for a talk.

They also raised £600 from a sponsored readathon, which was boosted by a £400 donation from school funds and a 25 per cent discount offer from Peters Books and Furniture, enabling the school to buy 175 new titles for its on-site library.

As a thank you to Birmingham based book supplier - Ray Dyer from the company was invited to attend the school's celebratory assembly, along with parents, carers and Joanne Tippler from Dudley Library Service.

Suzanne Roff, the school's literacy co-ordinator, said: "The assembly was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the wide range of reading activities that children across the whole school had been involved in and the manner in which they had themselves embraced and enhanced their own learning.

"It allowed us to say 'thank you' to the children and to parents, carers, outside agencies such as Peters Books and Furniture, Dudley Library Services and our own staff - everyone has made a truly fabulous contribution."
