RORY Campbell completed the ride of his life by cycling from John O'Groats to Lands End to help raise funds for cancer charities.

The 53-year-old former firefighter from Wollaston joined forces with five other riders from Bridgnorth to tackle the classic end-to-end road trip which they completed in 13 days.

Rory's participation in the ride was particularly poignant as he was called in to replace one of the riders who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

He said: "This is the biggest challenge I've ever taken on - but there were no real mishaps. One or two of us fell off our bikes and we got a bit wet cycling through Cornwall on the final day.

"We averaged around 80 miles per day. On one day we did over 100 but on others we did a bit less when we had to climb a few hills. I think Dartmoor was the hardest point.

"People were very generous. When they saw what we were raising funds for, we found people would give us money in the street, especially in Scotland and at the campsites."

Rory, who was riding in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer UK and Bowel Cancer UK, can still be sponsored through his charity pages www.justgiving.com/Rory-Campbell6 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer or www.justgiving.com/Rory-Campbell7 for Prostate Cancer UK.
