STOURBRIDGE Rugby Club players dug deep into their pockets when they took part in the annual Mel Williams Memorial tournament at Stourton Park.

More than150 players of all ages and abilities took part in the event which was created in memory of Mel, a former president of the club.

Secretary Huw Jenkins said: "Most of the people who took part are club members, but the competition is open to anyone who wants to enter.

"Mel was very popular and generous. The event was set up as a memorial to him."

The club raised £1,300 on the day, but that total is expected to rise further thanks to sponsorship and advertising.

Members also baked cakes to sell and staged a raffle with the proceeds going to the Midlands Air Ambulance.
