PRACTICAL support designed to help people improve their confidence and self esteem is on offer through a new initiative entitled 'FREDS'.

The scheme provides people with the chance to recycle and re-purpose unwanted household furniture, while working at their own pace.

It would suit people who haven't benefitted from short-term training courses.

Keith Slater, spokesman for the project, said: "FREDS offers practical hands-on training programmes to people, who don't necessarily have learning issues. It's for people who need a bit more time and don't like being rushed."

Known as the Furniture Refurbishment Education Development and Support, the scheme is a three-year project financed by Big Lottery funding to the tune of £250,000.

The project will have two bases, one of which will be at the Bridge Centre in Camp Hill, Wordsley, opposite the Red Cone Glass Cone.

Mr Slater added: "The scheme is open to anyone who feels they might benefit from it. Apart from the practical aspect, we also help people who want to start their own business.

"We can assist them with a business plan in addition to dealing with finance, accounts and cash flow."

Anyone wishing to support the project can donate items of unwanted wooden furniture to FREDS, which will then be donated to people in need.
